City: 1 million watch lakefront fireworks

An estimated million people gathered along the lakefront Friday night, filling Grant Park, to watch the city's early Fourth of July fireworks display over the lake and Navy Pier.

An estimated 1.25 million people passed through the downtown area Friday for the holiday weekend festivities including Taste of Chicago, said Cindy Gatziolis, a spokeswoman for the Mayor's Office of Special Events. She said close to a million people were on or near the lakefront to watch the fireworks display.

Body found at Southwest Side home

A death investigation was underway this evening after an unidentified man's body was found, apparently burned, at a Southwest Side residence, officials said.

Chicago police received a call about an incident at the residence about 3 p.m. in the 5000 block of South Talman Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood.

A woman who lives next door to where the man's body was found said she saw police take three people who lived in that residence--two men and a woman--away from the residence in a squad car.

She said she did not know them, but said the apparent victim owned that residence. She said she did not know the victim's name.

"It seemed like a fire. There was a lot of smoke," the neighbor, 23-year-old Carmen Zavala, said about 9:20 p.m. "The body's still inside. They haven't taken him out."

Zavala said police told her the body was in the basement.

A Chicago police officer shot and killed a 16-year-old boy Thursday night when the teen pointed a handgun at an officer during a foot chase in the Lawndale neighborhood, authorities said.

The teen was identified as Rakeem Nance, of the 1900 block of South Troy Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy found Nance received one gunshot wound in the right lower back in a homicide, a spokesman for the office said.

Authorities search for Lincoln Park bank robber

An unidentified man robbed a Lincoln Park bank late this morning, Chicago police said.

The robbery took place at a North Community Bank branch, 2335 N. Clark St., about 11:40 a.m., said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman. No one was hurt.

The man entered the bank, handed a teller a note indicating a demand for money and implied he was armed with a weapon, Mirabelli said. The teller handed over an unspecified amount of money to the man, who then fled from the bank.

Police could only provide a vague description of the man, who had a goatee and was wearing dark sunglasses. No one was in custody as of early this evening.
